David LaChapelle Studio Project, Los Angeles — 2019

David LaChapelle Studio Project

A chance meeting in Los Angeles led to one of the most important early moments in our journey as artists — an invitation to create work at David LaChapelle’s studio before murals had become part of our wider practice.

Known for his unmistakable visual world, David LaChapelle connected with our work and invited us to paint at his Los Angeles studio. At that point, we had never created a mural on this scale before. Until then, our experience had been rooted in smaller street pieces, so the project marked a major turning point.

Working alongside our friend and fellow LA artist Trusty Scribe, we created two large-scale mural pieces that captured the energy of the day and helped push us into a new chapter.

Mural One

Daft Punk

The first wall featured Daft Punk, built around the line “Don’t be DAFT, of course I’ll love you forever.” It brought together humour, pop culture and the bold layered visual language that was already beginning to define our work.

Robin Williams

The second wall featured Robin Williams, created for World Mental Health Day, with the words “Just because I’m smiling doesn’t mean I’m happy.” It introduced a more reflective emotional note to the day and remains one of the most memorable pieces from the project.

Why it mattered

An early turning point

What made this project so important was not just the setting, but the timing. This happened before murals had become part of our wider practice, at a point when we were still developing our direction as artists.

Being invited into that environment — and having someone of David LaChapelle’s stature respond so positively to our work — gave us a huge sense of belief. It was one of those rare moments where everything aligned: the right place, the right time and the right project to push us forward.
